Recently, I had the pleasure of reading Sal Khan’s insightful book, Brave New Words, where he dives into the powerful intersection of education and AI, drawing on his experiences with Khan Academy and the latest developments in generative AI. Khan’s vision for the future of learning resonates deeply, especially in a world where the pace of change is ever-accelerating. Much of what Khan articulates aligns with my own journey and mission in education, especially through my work with Niuversity, an online learning platform I cofounded in 2016. Back then, before the era of advanced AI, I set out with a similar vision: to create a mastery-based learning experience where each learner could progress at their own pace

and find joy in the journey of discovery.
Key Takeaways from Brave New Words
1. Mastery Learning and Personalized Education
Khan revisits a core concept: mastery learning. Unlike the traditional model where students advance at a fixed pace, often leaving gaps in understanding, mastery learning prioritizes proficiency. This approach allows students to fully grasp each concept before moving on. Khan makes a compelling case for how AI can be a game-changer in making mastery learning accessible to all, potentially closing learning gaps and tailoring education to each learner’s pace and needs.
2. The Role of AI in Modern Classrooms
While many fear that AI could replace teachers, Khan argues the opposite. He views AI as an empowering tool that can free up teachers to focus on high-value, interpersonal activities. Through AI-driven tools like Khanmigo, an AI tutor launched by Khan Academy, educators can offer students personalized support while automating routine tasks like grading. This shift allows teachers to engage more meaningfully with their students, enhancing the learning experience rather than diminishing it.
3. Ethics and Practical Challenges of AI in Education
Khan doesn’t shy away from the complexities that AI brings to education. From concerns about cheating to data transparency and ethical use, he acknowledges the need for carefully designed safeguards. Khanmigo, for instance, encourages students to think critically rather than providing direct answers—acting as a Socratic tutor rather than a shortcut to solutions. These thoughtful touches highlight Khan’s commitment to nurturing not just smarter students but ethically aware and independent thinkers.
4. Revolutionizing Accessibility in Education
The book underscores the potential of AI to break down barriers in education. Imagine a world where a student from any background can access a personal tutor anytime, anywhere. Khan’s vision is to democratize learning, using AI to provide quality education regardless of location or socio-economic status. This potential for universal access is inspiring, promising a future where knowledge is truly within reach for all.
5. Embracing Change with a Balanced Perspective
As with any technological advancement, the integration of AI in education requires us to balance excitement with caution. Khan’s perspective is clear: we should embrace AI’s potential to enhance learning, but we must also address its risks thoughtfully. The book encourages educators and parents alike to foster a healthy, informed relationship with technology, guiding young learners to use it as a tool for growth rather than a dependency.
Reading Brave New Words was a thought-provoking journey, sparking ideas on how we can reshape education to meet the demands of the 21st century. Khan’s optimism and practical vision left me inspired and hopeful about the role of AI in education. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the future of learning—whether you’re an educator, a parent, or simply curious about the transformative power of technology in education.
